Does magic work on money?

I’ve talked to a number of spiritual “intuitives” over the years. These are psychics, witches, and other people who practice a supernatural art/power source.

Many of them seem spiritually grounded, and connected to the universe. Their mode of spirituality is working for them in their lives, and it helps them serve their clientele. These practitioners are able to act as guides for their clients, help them gain clarity, and move them through difficult periods of transformation. Often when other methods have failed.

In one area, though, I consistently hear the same failing. “This stuff doesn’t work with money!” It doesn’t help them pick winning stocks or lottery numbers, nor summon random bags of cash to be dropped at their door. I have a theory as to why. And actually, it’s not “because these people are all fake!”

It’s because money itself isn’t real. Money is a tool for tracking favors and debts. It arises when a society gets large enough that you can’t mediate the exchange of favors via relationships. With friends, you take turns picking up the check, you help them move, you coach them through tough times… Whether you realize it or not, there’s a running tab and it’s reflected in the power dynamic in your relationship. A good friend doesn’t pay for dinner 100% of the time. Instead, they let you contribute to the relationship as well so that you remain on even footing.

Scale that system of reciprocity up to a society where you’re routinely buying things from strangers, and you get money. You work a job and help people 9-5 to make money. Then you take those dollars (ie IOUs), and use them to buy groceries, pay a mortgage, etc. Money = IOUs backed by the full faith and credit of our governing institutions.

Back to magic. Let’s pretend you cast a spell where you’re trying to summon a huge pile of money for yourself. What you’re really doing is trying to force a bunch of people to owe you a favor. That just doesn’t work on a spiritual level. The universe doesn’t let you hijack anyone else’s free will. The spell will fail, and you will be frustrated.

But spiritual magic can still help with money problems. The stories where I’ve seen it work, are when people pray for guidance about how to make more money, they pray for a job that pays more, they pray for help with some of their expenses and obligations. The universe can be very generous in these areas. But when it comes to accruing wealth, it demands that you earn those IOUs, rather than get them through manipulation. Service not spells.

As always, though, be careful what you wish for. If you make it your highest priority to make a million dollars a year, you might succeed, but along the way you may find that you have other needs which are more important, which are still unmet. You’ve forced your own will on the universe, and denied it the opportunity to guide you to a rich and meaningful life for you.

I think most of us are better served by humility.
