Normalizing Entrepreneurship

“If you want to change the world, you must first change yourself” (somebody, Ghandi probably)

When I set out to start this podcast, one of my goals was to normalize entrepreneurship in my own mind. I wanted to see it not as an “extreme, high-risk” moonshot, but as something that normal people do to make a living. Today, I am excited to say that I have finally accomplished my goal! When I think about getting money now, I think not about earning a paycheck at an office, but about creating value that others will pay for. That’s very exciting, and it opens an entire world of opportunity. My journey has just begun!

My two most recent guests, Joshua Lisec and Chris Kiefer were really helpful to me in this. I think everyone has skills, whether they work for someone else or not. But what these two have done is set up businesses around their skills, to make a living on their own, without a boss.

And after talking to them it occurred to me that I could do the same thing with my skills! Intellectually, I had known this, but after 6 months of immersion, that message finally made it to my subconscious and clicked.

What’s kind of incredible is that it was actually a very long process to get to this point. I’ve interviewed roughly 40 people, and listened to hundreds of hours of entrepreneurship-themed podcasts. Even with podcasts that didn’t focus specifically on entrepreneurship as a theme, I still found myself focusing and thinking about the businesses created by the hosts (Meb Faber is a great example of this).

Ultimately, I want to normalize entrepreneurship for others. I see now that it really isn’t a scary thing, or a heroic thing, or a courageous thing to be an entrepreneur. All it takes is a new set of skills and attitudes that are sometimes uncomfortable to acquire. But I am convinced that this new way of thinking can be taught to people who have the desire for it. In fact, the mind is so malleable that I think even this initial desire can be developed over time. In the coming months, I will study and learn everything I can about guiding people through this process and how to empower them to make their own powerful, unique contribution to the world.
