Simon Erickson – Motley Fool Explorer, Investing in Disruptive Innovation

My article on how different mindsets match different investing strategies https://medium.com/datadriveninvestor/suspending-disbelief-e72fb45b3bb6

I love talking to people who are excited about the work they do. This particular episode I have the pleasure of speaking with Simon Erickson, leader of the Motley Fool Explorer investing service. He’s got some really useful ways of looking at investing, and I had a lot of fun learning from his approach. I’ve put an article together about how successful investors find a certain style, system, or strategy that works well for their personality and lifestyle. You can look that up in the show notes. Simon’s wheelhouse is really centered around the growth side of investing, particularly with disruptive innovation (a topic that has come up a couple other times on this podcast). So I hope you’ll enjoy, and learn something cool.

  • The tension between competitive advantage and disruptive innovation (his terms).
  • Network effects (particularly of political parties)
  • A round of Buy-Sell-or-Hold
  • Exciting trends in the market today
  • His desired ratio of winners:losers in a portfolio, and the differing magnitudes of stocks in each category

Music for this podcast is by Cambrian Explosion, who traveled back in time to save Joan of Arc (or as the French call her, Jean de Arc. I don’t actually know, but I think I’ve seen something with her name on it in French, and was like, “oh wait! That’s Joan of Arc!”). Anyway, they totally saved her from getting burned at the stake, and it was most triumphant. But then they got back and picked up a history book and were like, “bummer, man. I guess that multiverse stuff is for real. We may have saved her, but it just created a separate world. And probably because of the butterfly effect they have like, a double Hitler now only who knows?

Anyway you can find them performing around Portland, OR, and listen on spotify, itunes, or cepdx.com.

Thanks for listening.
